A study on the Time Effect of Depression Change and Social Relationship among the Younger Elderly
Jeon Geun-Seong

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to identify trends of the depression change among the younger elderly, and to verify the temporal effects of social relationships of the depression change among them. To accomplish the purpose of this study, the 2nd, 5th, 8th, and 11th Korean Welfare Panel Study, the nationally representative data, were employed. The target participants were aged between 65 to 69 at the time of the 2nd survey. The main results are as follows; first, the depression level of the younger elderly decreased in the beginning and increased as time passed. It shows that a non-linear relationship was identified as the most appropriate model for the depression level of the younger elderly. In other words, the depression level decreased from the 2nd year data to the 8th year data, but increased slightly in the 11th year data. It is considered that the 11th year is the late old age to the targeted aged group. Second, as the result of examining the depression changes of the early elderly after controlling social relationship variables, the slope of the linear function and the slope of the quadratic function were both statistically significant. The initial value of the depression level, however, increased 2.5 times higher than before controlling the variables. It shows that the depression increased after controlling social relationship. Third, the time effect of each of the panel data relating to the social relationship and the depression showed the same results whether their spouses were present or absent in the 2nd, 5th, 8th, and 11th panel data. And the relationship with their children and the social interaction showed the same effect. The effect of the depression, however, showed in different manner depending on the type of social relationship. The relationship satisfaction with children was the most influential followed by the social relationship satisfaction and the spouse presence or absence. Based on these results, the significance and limitations of this study were suggested.
